Google Docs New Features Review
Apr 12th
Most people I work with and have gone to school with know how big of a fan I am of Google Docs. Especially when I was on the go with my Netbook. Google announced today that they are improving on their app system with amazing new features. However, on testing it, I am finding some issues. I am running the latest version of Chrome and have set my preferences to create new documents using the latest version of Docs and it appears to be running smoothly.
There are a few things that Google keeps missing on with their Docs system like the availability of fonts, like of contextual menu items when right clicking on the document, and the ability to resize tables in real time. I have seen many Web 2.0 products on the internet, such as CodeRun IDE which allows a programmer to build applications (in several hot languages including Silverlight) on the fly. When right clicking on a project, you have a great menu system which allows you to build, run , and add new items into the solution. All you have in Google docs is the option to copy and paste, and create a link of the selected text. Much more could be added on that menu system.
I know there are plenty of other free online document editors that have far exceeded the features of Google docs, which is unfortunate for Google. Docs seems to be one of the flagship products and if they really want it to be top of the line, they really should speed up development on it.
Mac OSx SL on Windows 7 with VmWare
Apr 4th
So I was in the PX today and was putzzin around and saw that they had Mac OSx Snow Leopard on sale for $28, so I picked it up. I am usually a Linux guy, although I have been using Windows 7 on this new laptop with VirtualBox running Ubuntu 9.10 when I want to do some real programming, but I have heard good things about Mac for programming. Especially Ruby. After I got the install disc, I was seeing a lot of issues trying to install it. I was getting nowhere, really fast, even with all the info I was finding on the internet.
Well, after about four hours or so, I finally got it working. It is installing right now with the help of this blog article from Redmond Pie. Here is an image of it installing.

Great Success! Can’t wait to start testing it out. Oh, and Mac’s still suck. Just so you know.

Windows 7

So I am sure everyone knows, Winblows 7 is out. I guess they ran out of cool names or something. Not that XP was really a name… or 98 either. Wow, they really have issues with naming conventions over there at Microsoft don’t they. In any case, its out and it is apparently flying of shelves. Amazon had more pre-orders for W7 than they did for the latest Harry Potter novel. Yeah, thats big.
I can’t speak for the final version as I don’t have it, but I did get on the alpha, beta, and RC’s. It is a way better OS than xp or vista. Hands down. It really is the best Windows yet. Best of all, the system requirements are actually lower than Vista. I had it running on my Netbook with no problem, with the fancy graphics running. It wasn’t slow or sluggish at all. I was really impressed with the whole thing. There were a few bugs that I experienced in those versions, but I am sure they worked out [some of] those kinks.
When I buy a new system, I will have no qualms about having this new OS installed. Will I dual boot with Linux… of course. What kind of nerd would I be otherwise.
jFit Tracker
Aug 6th
I am going to start developing my first real Java application with a Diet and Fitness tracking system I am going to call jFit Tracker. I have started a project on Sun’s Kenai at http://kenai.com/projects/jfit-tracker. I have high hopes for this but I need support. Cheer me on and tell me I can do it, and if you can code… join my project and help out.
